It seems that the bar to exhibit with the Miami Watercolor Society gets higher each year. So much talent in this group and the art they produce is outstanding. This is the reason why I am so happy to be part of this exhibition and to have been judged by the great Soon Y. Warren.
Below is the piece I will be exhibiting, along with the detail of the upcoming opening reception.
See you there!

A Visit to Bernice Steinbaum Gallery
Bernice Steinbaum (BS) was a name I had heard over and over. She is an art dealer, curator, gallerist, speaker and author, but she is also legendary, a pioneer, caring, witty and fashionable. Imagine my excitement when I found out that the field trip for the Lowe Docents would be a tour of Bernice's gallery and home.
Her New York gallery was one of the first to showcase women artists and artists of color. She made a move to Miami's Wynwood area and is now in Coconut Grove. A walk into her home/gallery is a feast for the eyes. There are so many things to see, explore and enjoy. The tour was made even more special because Bernice is funny, witty and each piece came with a fabulous story. She told us about the artist and the creation of the pieces
It was a delight to walk into each room of her house. The creativity and art pieces don't just adorn the walls, but the ceiling and floors. As an artist, the visit to her gallery was very inspiring. The stories she told us about Cuban artist, Pavel Acosta, and how his pieces were created with the paint chips from crumbling buildings in Cuba touched me. It showed the passion to create even without art supplies.
This was an experience I will not forget.

Miami Watercolor Society 46th Annual Spring Exhibition
It is always a great honor to be juried into a show. The bar seems higher each year at the Miami Watercolor Society. This show is even more special because the painting selected by the juror, from the two I submitted, is the one of my granddaughter at the Miami-Dade Public Library.

Return to Grovehouse Artists
Many years ago, I was a member of a great little artist co-op in Coconut Grove, Grovehouse Artists. It was a nice place to exhibit and socialize, but the most important thing I took from that experience was life-long friendships. The group inspired me and exposed me to many other groups. It was through the people I met there that I was able to participate in art in public places: painting a peacock, which is still standing on Grand Avenue and the manatee that was displayed in downtown South Miami and now lives in a private home in the area. I was able to take the course with Debra Cortese "I'd Rather be in the Studio" that pushed me into social media; a life. and business, changing experience. It was also a workshop with Debra about licensing my art that sent me in that direction and I now have many products through DENY Designs, Kess Inhouse and Geckorouge.
I think you can see that a lot of what is happening in my life today had its roots with the Grovehouse Artists. I recently re-joined their group, which is now "without walls'. The work is on line and social media with exhibits that take place wherever possible in the area.
We will have our yearly Deering Estates exhibit with an opening reception on June 15th from 7 - 9 pm. On this night, the Deering is free to the public and you are all invited. The piece below, and hopefully a couple more, will be on exhibit. Join us!!

Ribbon Cutting - Coconut Grove Village West Welcome Center
Four years ago, I met Mr. Jihad Rashid at the Coconut Grove Collaborative to discuss the painting of the Peacock for the Coconut Grove Peacock Tour. I learned that Mr. Rashid was extremely proud of his community and his heritage and had high hopes for its improvement.
(Click photos to enlarge them)
Fast forward, and this past week Mr. Rashid invited me to the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Coconut Grove Village West Welcome Center. He felt that I was part of this community by having painted a piece of art that makes the village proud. I was happy to see the turn out and the enthusiasm in this part of the Grove. Behind the red carpet, ribbon cutting space was the image of the Nassau Daddy looking down. He is also on the cover of the informational booklet and the Black Heritage Tour.
The welcome Center is located at the new KROMA Gallery, a new collective art space consisting of 18 art studios and a communal gallery. Also on Grand Avenue is the construction of the Gibson Plaza, a mixed use economic development project. This development will consist of 56 rental units for the elderly and low-income tenants, plus a training center on the ground floor. All this taking place in a part of the Grove that has long been neglected.

I took my grandchildren to see the peacock and now I hope to show them the new KROMA Gallery and the Gibson Plaza. It is a lesson for them to see what can happen in a community. The residents of this village, and the leaders with a vision, are finally seeing their hard work come to fruition. I hope they never give up.

They Want the Hat Back
I painted an art piece, “Nassau Daddy”, which stands on the corner of Grand Avenue and Douglas Road in Coconut Grove. I wrote a while back how the school
children’s excitement had damaged his hat. Back in January, I cleaned up the head and
fixed the damages with paint.
Apparently, the
community felt that the hat was a big part of Nassau Daddy so they requested
that I create another one. It is not easy making a hat without the model. I
measured and got started. Without Mr. Nassau nearby, I had to create the hat in
a different way. I started it and went back for a fitting. It turns out that I
will need to complete the hat in the corner, on site. I need to leave the back
of the hat opened in order to fit it though its head, then close it with mesh
and plaster once I am there. It has not been an easy project. I don’t think I
will do this again so I was glad to hear that the school bus stop has been
moved from that corner. Maybe now, Nassau Daddy can keep his hat on for the
rest of the summer……and the upcoming school year.

Nassau Daddy Stands Proud........Still
A couple of years
ago, I participated in a street art project called, “Coconut Grove Peacock Tour”, here in Miami. My
peacock was sponsored by Pinnacle Housing and the Coconut Grove Collaborative. “Nassau Daddy”
has been proudly standing on the corner of Grand Avenue and Douglas Road. The
neighbors were so protective of it and proud of the Bahamian heritage it represents.
Before the new year, I had a call from Mr. Rashid, with the Coconut Grove Collaborative, with the unfortunate news
that the peacock had been damaged. Mr. Rashid asked if there was any way that I could make him look like he did.

I was told by the neighbors that the school children use this corner as a bus stop and maybe got a little too excited climbing and playing on “Nassau Daddy”. His beautiful hat was broken off and some of the jewels that make up his feathers on the back had also come off. I went this past weekend and did some repairs. I had to scrape the remains of the hat and re-paint the area. The missing jewels on the back were also replaced. I am looking into re-creating the hat. It seems that the children are not the only ones enjoying this piece of art. The neighbors told me how the tourists stop and take photos, which made me very happy.

Farewell to Grovehouse Artists Gallery
Three years ago, I had a life-changing experience when I took a workshop with Debra Cortese, and a number of local artists, at the Windisch-Hunt Gallery in Coconut Grove. I did not know at the time that the workshop would give me the information I needed to get my art out of the closet and into the technical world. At the same time, I also made some life-long friends. Some of the artists there had been part of the Grovehouse Artists co-op and were waiting to re-open at the new location in Mayfair. With their encouragement, I joined the group. We were all so excited and enthusiastic at this new beginning for the gallery. The gallery offered art in all mediums, as well as glass, wood, mosaics and sculptures. What a wonderful experience!
Although I left the gallery over a year ago, it was still the place to visit on gallery walk night and catch up with old friends. It was also through my friendships there, that I have participated in other fun activities in the Grove, such as the monthly drum circle and the fabulous Mango Strut parade.
Sad to say, Grovehouse Artist Gallery will have its last opening reception on Saturday, February 3rd. They will be closing their gallery space at the end of February and continuing on "without walls". What this means is that they will try and mount 3 to 4 exhibits a year in different venues. I wish these artists the best as they share their talents with the South Florida area.
Here's a video of the opening at Mayfair in September, 2009. Click on the arrow to view. Enjoy!

"Nassau Daddy" Unveiling

"Nassau Daddy", the peacock I painted for the Coconut Grove Peacock Tour, is now finished and ready to take his place on the corner of Grand Avenue and Douglas Road. The peacock is bright and colorful with everything that represents the tropics.
He is a Bahamian policeman that will stand proud in his Coconut Grove neighborhood bringing color and beauty to the area; reminding the residents of the Grove's early settlers.
