Beach Treasures

Most artists I know, or creative people in general, think about their craft all the time. It happens to me too. I will be out with a camera and taking reference photos for future paintings. Of course, I now have more photos than I could ever use, even if I lived to 102.

Last week, I was at the beach. I took a walk and picked up anything I felt I could turn into a piece of art. Had I been on the west coast of Florida, it would have been a bag of shells. The photo above are the treasures I found. I will use them as my canvas; a good way to recycle. Check back in a couple of weeks and see what I have done with these "found" objects.

Watch Out For Willy

Life is just amazing. A few years ago, I worked in a building on the Miami River. There were days when you would see a few employees looking down into the water and you always knew it was probably a manatee. They would swim right up against the wall.  We were able to see some that had scratches and marks on their bodies from being hurt by boats. They were big and gentle. Who would have guessed that ,a few years later,   I would have a 6 foot (plus) fiberglass manatee in my garage and I would be painting it for the South Miami Manatee Festival. The project's mission is "to raise awareness of our natural resources, our beautiful waterways and Bay, our wildlife and aquatic treasures."

"Willy", my manatee,  was sponsored by Williamson Cadillac. The unveiling will take place on May 21st at Sunset Place in downtown South Miami. We have documented the entire painting process and a video will soon be released. I invite you to save the date and come join us.

My Greatest Creation

Rubber Band

Through the Window

Tulane Campus

Every mother thinks their child is cute, smart and talented.......................well, I know mine is.  He is not a child any more, but he is still all of that and more. Many members of my family enjoyed/enjoy painting: my grandmother, my uncle, my niece, myself,  and my son.

My son, Tim,  started showing talent at a very early age. We decided to get him a small desk, when he was two, with lots of coloring materials. When he was a little older, he was taken to art classes. As a true artist, he did not like the classes because he wanted to paint what he felt like painting and not what was planned by the teacher.  As he got older and had many other interests, he was  still able to sketch anything placed in front of him.  He did not go into the arts, but  managed to take an art course as part of the curriculum in college. He is now married, with two children. He tries to paint or sketch when time allows.

I am now seeing the talent being passed down to my granddaughter, Nola. Although she may choose a career path that does not require artistic talent, she may be like her Dad and enjoy it for the rest of her life. It is great to see them enjoy their creations while I just smile and know that he is my greatest creation.
