Artists + Art Lovers = Lowe Art Museum Docents

"Palos Verdes" Oil - 16 X 20 - by Diane Aronesty
The Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami campus is a place I spend some of my time since my retirement. I wanted to do some volunteering, but at a place that would make me happy at the same time. What I have found is that many of the docents/guides at the Lowe are not just art lovers and community minded individuals, but also artists. Some of us take workshops together, attend meetings at the Miami Watercolor Society, attend exhibit openings, and enjoy just "talking art". Some of the Lowe artists are very involved  in the local art community and others are, as I call it, "closet artists", not ready to share their talent with the world.

My friend, Diane Aronesty, is one of those talented artists that has been painting for pleasure. She recently re-located to California and is now enjoying painting the beautiful west coast with a "plein air" group. She shared the above piece with me.  I immediately loved the composition, the colors and the loose effect she had achieved by painting outdoors. I am happy to say that Diane is now ready to share her art pieces with the world and is in the process of creating a website. If anyone is interested in this piece, Diane is willing to discuss the price with you. She can be contacted at:  dglaumo@hotmail.com.

Who knew that getting involved in a worthwhile activity would result with so many fellow artists and lifelong friends in the making. Volunteer.....it may be more than you ever expected.

The Sketchbbok Tour - Meet the Miami Artists

How do you sketch in Miami and have total strangers physically  hold your sketch and see it all over the country? You participate in The Sketchbook Project.  What is the sketchbook project? The project is described as a "concert tour, but with sketchbooks." Artists selected their topics and sketched during the last few months of 2010.  The sketchbooks will be exhibited at galleries and museums across the country. They each have a bar code allowing artists to keep track of their sketchbooks, and how many are viewing it, on line.  After the tour,  the sketchbooks will be available for viewing as part of the permanent collection at The Brooklyn Art Library. This is the first year I participate. I have since found that a few of my artists friends in Miami are also participating. Here are some of the local artists:

Rosie Brown -       http://arthousecoop.com/users/rosiebrown
Nancy Martini -    http://arthousecoop.com/users/nancy-martini
Elizabet Chacon -  http://arthousecoop.com/users/elizabetchaconart
Angeline Marie Martinez - http://www.angelinemarie.net/Welcome.html
Sheri Friedman (Blu Moon Studios) -http://www.artclassesinmiami.com/

The sketchbooks were in Austin, Texas this week and heading towards Portland, Maine. Maybe next year, the tour can come to Miami.

Rich and Creamy

"Lady In Red"-  Oil - 16 X 20
Rich and creamy. No, I am not describing a dish, but a painting medium. Every medium has a characteristic that attracts different types of artists. The texture, color  and brilliance of oils does that for me. I started painting with oils in 1977. I loved them immediately, but I did not enjoy the clean up with the smelly turpentine. In recent years, I have fallen in love with watercolors and experimented with acrylics. Life has come a full circle and I just started using oils again. I now use Turpenoid and avoid the strong odor. As everything does in life, oils have now evolved and now there are even water-soluble oils. Yes, oil and water!

Above is a recently completed piece in oil. I had to think differently as I worked on this piece. For one, I did not have to worry about protecting my white areas as in watercolor. I also did not have to worry about paint drying up quickly on the palette as I talked on the phone.  Am I leaving other mediums for oils..............absolutely not!  Art is all about exploring, experimenting and enjoying!
