Acrylics..........I think I like you!

Thirty-three years ago, I took an oil painting class at the encouragement of my husband. I had just had a baby, was away from home, and feeling very lonely. He felt doing something I had always enjoyed would lift my spirits. He had no idea what he was about to create. I painted in that medium for years, then stopped painting for a while as I climbed the career ladder.

Three years ago, I took up watercolors and fell in love with this new medium. I still liked the look of oil on canvas, but not the mess. Wanting to stay in a water medium, I started a class in acrylics. A few weeks back, I wrote about my class and shared my first abstract painting. As I got the feel of this new paint on the brush, I decided to create some other things.

I wanted to share what I have done since and inform you that each will be part of a show: one at the Miami-Dade Interamerican Campus Gallery and the other at the GroveHouse Artists Gallery. Want to know what they look like in person............................come to the show!

P. S. - My next class should be on how to photograph artworks and eliminate the glare.

The Kreativ Blogger Award

Monique Lassooij presented me with this award. She is a fellow artist I met at the art marketing class I took last year. She mentioned her blog in class and after reading her blog, I was inspired to start one. But, like so many things in life, there are strings attached by accepting the award. I have to list seven interesting things about myself and then pass on the trophy...So here are 7 interesting things about me:

1. I was born in Cuba and came to the U.S. at the age of nine. I am the MOST Cuban -American you could meet and yet.........the MOST American-Cuban you could ever meet......at ease in both cultures!

2. I was one of those kids that took the art test in the back of the match box and sent it in hoping to win an art education.

3. Too serious and practical, I studied business and yet always painted and loved the arts.

4. I am a people person, yet I struggle with portraits.

5. Living near the water has had an effect on my painting selections.

6. I give 110% to everything I do.

7. I am so grateful that life has allowed me to play with paints at this point in my life.

Now I will pass on the award to Debra Cortese (http://debracortese.com/blog/)

Debra Cortese is the person who coordinated and taught the art marketing class where I met Monique. It was a life-changing experience for me. An artist, photographer, and designer, Debra's designs are inspired by nature. She is totally immersed in the arts and is the power behind many great events in the area.

Spring Into Action

The month of March and Spring are right around the corner. For me, in South Florida, it does not mean much weather-wise. However, it has become my busiest month thus far. As a member of the GroveHouse Artists Gallery (http://www.grovehouseartists.net/) , I will be the Artist of the Month in March. What this means is that my work will be featured and I will be given additional space to display my work. This also means that I need to make sure that paintings are completed, framed and ready to be hung on March 1st. I can handle that! Now let's add the fact that in March the Miami Watercolor Society will have it's Spring Exhibition. I am also working on my submissions for that show. Now, I am a little busier, but still under control. In March is also the Gifford Lane Art Stroll. That was so much fun last year that I decided to participate again. Now, I am a little stressed. I love to paint, but I have other interests and responsibilities that take up hours of each day. Since what I will have painted will hopefully be hanging somewhere, I need new things to take to Gifford Lane. During March, I may also have an opportunity to display in a brand new place in South Miami that I could not possibly pass up. Now, comes the icing on this cake. My son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter will be visiting in March. Their bedroom is my studio year-round. I will need to pack up the paints and brushes and set up a play area.................not to mention all of the baking I have planned!!
Now you know that Spring Madness applies to many, but I would not have it any other way!!
