Here We Come!

The manatee unveiling took place on May 20th at the 1st National Bank of South Miami. It was a great turnout as everyone came to see these colorful sculptures. It was also an opportunity to see them all in one location before they are placed throughout South Miami. Dignitaries, sponsors, artists and the community enjoyed a night of food, drinks, plus color, color and more color.

A big "Thank You" to fellow artist, and friend, Nancy Martini for blogging about the event and always supporting the arts and artists in our community. To view her blog: http://nancymartini.blogspot.com/2011/05/south-miami-manatee-fest-supports-local.html

A special thanks to Mary Lage (photographer) and the South Miami Manatee Festival for documenting the night with photos. To view, click on the links below:

South Miami Manatee Fest

Ever seen a real manatee? Want to see over 15 of them in one location? The South Miami Manatee Fest on Friday, May 20th is your opportunity.   The South Miami Manatee Fest is a public art event that will take place on the streets of South Miami, Coral Gables, and unincorporated Dade County. The project’s mission  is to raise awareness of our natural resources, our beautiful waterways and Bay, our wildlife and aquatic treasures. At the end of the project, these structures are auctioned to raise funds for charity. What a great way to bring art to the community and funds to organizations.

This will be the first glimpse of these fabulous 7 ft works of art before they take to the streets of South Miami. Local artists have taken these fiberglass structures and created unique works of art revealing their creativity and the sponsors' request.

My sponsor was Williamson Cadillac. Their manatee had to have a car theme. I came up with the idea of a race car driver and converted the base into a mini race car. It was only fitting to call this manatee "Willy". The making of "Willy" the manatee has been documented in the following video:: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uVWVCdxd9s.

To get the real effect of these sculptures, and to see the little red car, join us Friday, May 20th at 6:00 pm at the 1st National Bank of South Miami. You are guaranteed to be wowed!!!!

EarthArt Exhibit by Paul Saint Laurent

Waterfall Over the Edge - 8 ft

Nature plays an important role in artists lives. Most are inspired by it, some, like me, use it as a canvas and others find the beauty in nature and turn it into a piece of art. The latter is the way that my friend Paul Saint Laurent uses nature. He exposes the artistry in nature that many do not see. The elements of art are found in  his pieces: line, color, texture and shape. His creativity is evident in the way he selects the wood, cuts it, polishes it and displays it in order to reveal to us what he sees.

Paul can take a piece of wood and turn it into something beautiful like a landscape or a waterfall ;or functional like bowls and salt/pepper shakers. He puts it best when he says, " I don't seek to make nature perfect; I choose to bare and celebrate its innate perfection."

As you continue to seek ways to reduce, reuse and recycle, don't miss an opportunity to get inspired. Paul will be showing these pieces, and many other creations, at his EarthArt Exhibit:

Place: Miami Beach Botanical Garden
2000 Convention Center Drive
Miami Beach, Florida
Date: Opening Reception, May 31st - 6-8:30 p.m.
Show runs through June 2nd
Admission is Free

Reduce...........Reuse..................Recycle!

Found objects........................after

A couple of the "trash" pieces I found are now ready for a new life. I love using these pieces as canvases. What better way than to show on them where they were originally found. Some artists are inspired by Florida's beautiful gardens and I am too, but there is nothing like a beautiful sky and the beach below for me. I hope this gets you thinking of what "found" objects can become with just a little TLC. Make 2011 the year when you reuse items and reduce waste. Follow the three R's for a healthier planet: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
