Miami Watercolor Society - 36th Annual Fall Exhibition

I joined the Miami Watercolor Society in April of 2008. It is a great place to meet other artists, find out about exhibiting possibilities, watch outstanding demonstrations and enroll in worshops from visiting artists. I got up enough nerve to enter their juried fall exhibition last year and, to my surprise and delight, I was selected. The painting was from a picture I had taken that summer while staying at Sanibel and a restaurant there called Mc T's. I still remember my anxiety and the number of times I started that painting. The exhibition was at a beautiful gallery on Brickell.

This past spring, I decided to do it again. I painted from a picture I took at the South Miami Art Show years ago of lemonade cups and lemons. Once again, I struggled with the colors and the very dark background until I felt good enough to enter it. I could not believe I was selected to exhibit. The location was at the Deering Estates and what a beautiful exhibit that was. The location with the views art, and music made for a wonderful night.

I am now happy to say that I was again selected to exhibit at this year's fall exhibition. In August I took a batik workshop with Lynda Wellens and I knew that my entry would be using this new technique. Not only am I in love with the process, but I chose to paint something I also love, the shadows on leaves at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens. This year's show will take place at Miami International University of Art and Design. The entries for this show are incredible. The works are getting better and better. With the amount of talent at the Miami Watercolor Society, it will be very challenging to get selected next spring. So for now, I will enjoy the moment.

Common Roots Exhibit

This week I was fortunate enough to be part of the Common Roots Exhibit at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden. This was an art exhibit about native and traditional plants of Florida and the Caribbean region. The curators for this show Debra Cortese, Winsome Bolt and Carol Hoffman-Guzman did a fantastic job in selecting the works and promoting the exhibit. The opening reception on Tuesday night revealed a variety of art; everything from oils, watercolors, photography, to scultptures made from plants. The room was filled to capacity and everyone was enjoying the art, the wine from Schnebly Winery and fresh nibblings from The Market Company. The night ended with the announcement of the awards. If you click on the title above, you will see the Arts by St Johns web page listing the winners. I also would like to share with you the web pages to these curators and award winners. The show runs through Saturday, October 10th (12 PM). Enjoy!

FLower Power Forever

I have spent my entire life drawing. My first experience with painting was 36 years ago when I took an oil painting class in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida. In 2006, prior to my retirement, I started to experiment with watercolors in a miniature format (2.5 by 3.5 inches). I still paint that way today, although I have moved on to larger sizes. The more I paint, the more I want to learn. Something new I decided to try was prismacolor markers. They are so bright, colorful and easy to use. I decided to start a series of colorful miniatures using these markers. The colored flowers took me back to the 1960's and the flower power, peace and love era. I call these little creations: flower power peace and love. Most of them have peace signs and hearts. I actually find making these therapeutic. Time passes and I am covering the entire piece of paper with color. I have sold many of these, but you either love them or hate them. As for me, I will continue to make these to relax and reminisce of a time gone by.
