Miami Watercolor Society - September Meeting

Everyone that paints, takes pictures or creates in any way, knows the importance of composition. During our September meeting at the Miami Watercolor Society, Lynda Wellens and Terry Mulrooney shared with us some important aspects of composition. Terry is a watercolorist and photographer. She shared with us how she puts together a painting from a photograph. It was great to see how she manipulates a photograph through photoshop to arrive at the desired composition. She also changes color pictures to black and white to determine the values.

Lynda Wellens is a watercolorist and a watercolor teacher at Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden. She brought a power point presentation on composition. We discussed line, shape and form. What made this so interesting was that she used paintings by Robert Lovett, Karen Frey, Juan Carlos Ramirez, Joan Miro and others to point out balance, contrast and other principles of design. The lecture was summarized by showing a picture of water lilies taken by Elizabet Chacon and how through photoshop she selected the best composition to paint. The painting that resulted from the photograph was shared with the group.

If that was not enough to get everyone started, someone in the group is a photoshop teacher and passed out her cards to those wishing to start learning to manipulate photos and end up with a great composition. Our members are so talented. Thank you Lynda, Terry and Elizabet!!

We are open.........Come on in!!!!!

The grand re-opening of the Grove House Artists Gallery was set for Saturday, Sept. 5th. The day started out sunny and quickly started to deteriorate. Here we had an opening night and art stroll in Coconut Grove, and the weather was miserable. For those of you that don't know the Grove, it is a happening spot for tourists and locals. On art stroll night, first Saturday of the month, the vendors and restaurants go all out with samples and specials. There is also live music and entertainment all around. With this weather, there may not be anything going on. We waited and, right around 6 pm, the rain stopped. Yippeeee!!! We would be having a grand opening after all! It was great to see all of the artists there and people "strolling" in and praising the works. My husband who is a great photograher and videographer, decided to document it all for us. He put together a video and put it on You Tube for all to see (link on the title or the link below to watch). It was a beautiful night and the icing on the cake was that a few of us made the first sales at the new location. As the song on the video says, "LET'S DO IT AGAIN"!

Grove House Gallery Re-Opening

There's a new location for the Grove House Gallery and a new beginning for me. I visited this gallery about three years ago, prior to my retirement. I was looking forward to painting and for a possible place for my creations. As many of you can relate, a little fear, a lot of happenings, a grandbaby, and my application was put away. When I found out that the gallery was looking for a new place to re-locate, I began to entertain the idea of joining this creative group. My granddaughter is walking, talking and drinking from a cup so I should also be ready to move on in the world. I applied, was accepted, and will be part of the re-opening exhibition. I visited the gallery and all of the works look beautiful in this new place. You can feel the excitement and see the hard work that goes into getting it ready for its opening. The Grove will be full of excitement this Saturday with music, food, art, and the pajama crawl in preparation for the Bed Race the following day. I invite you all to come to the opening. If you can't make it on Saturday, Sept. 5th, then come by another day. The address and hours of operation are below
