Miami Free Art Friday

Living in Miami and surrounded by so much art and inspiration, it was only natural that we would also have a "Free Art Friday" as many other communities have started. The founder of the Miami Chapter is Miami-based artist, Registered Artist. Free Art Friday has  chapters in Australia, Canada, Israel, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Portugal, Serbia, UK, and all over the U.S.

For those of you not familiar with this community project, I will explain. Every Friday, we have an art scavenger hunt. Art is placed around the city..... free for the taking. It is not only fun, but a way to start an art collection from established and emerging artists. As an artist, I participated twice, but plan to continue doing it. The art is photographed at the drop off location and a hint given to help those of us looking for it. You have to be fast and make it to the location before anyone else. With a City this size, and it's traffic, it is not easy, but challenging and rewarding when you get what you go after.

Living in the South Miami/Kendall area, I tend to hunt for what is in my neighborhood.  It allows me to get there quick and, to my luck, I am in the area to find pieces by Miami portrait artist, Ileana Prosper Holman. Her pieces are fantastic. I now own three.

What Ileana does not know is that my 6 year old granddaughter wants to be an artist. I matted my finds and took them to her in Washington DC. Her Mom plans to frame them and hang them in her room. When I gave them to her, she said,  "I can't decide where I want to hang them yet, let me hold them and look at them in my hand for a while before I decide".  She, and her Dad,  plan to make a drop when they  visit Miami at Christmas time.

An inspiration to a future artist with a story of fun behind it. Thanks, Ileana!

  2. There is nothing I want more than to be able to participate in one of the Free Art Fridays in Miami and Ileana's art is what I would pursue. You are so fortunate to have acquired those three. I am jealous. Thanks to Ileana for sending me to you blog.

  6. I had to come over from Ily's blog and see. Unfortunately this town of mine has nothing like this. Too dangerous and to many artists are too cheap to "just throw a piece away."

Banksy snuck into town and did a piece on a wall of the old Packard plant, 24 hours later a gallery had stolen it for their own benefit.
