Mini Oil Spill

Don't panic by the title. This oil spill was small, controlled and no danger to the environment.

In a couple of weeks I, along with eighteen other artists, will be exhibiting at Riviera Presbyterian Church. I know that December is a time when there is a lot of spending, and given the state of the economy, it may even be a leaner than ever Christmas. For that reason, and to break in my new oils, I have decided to paint a few small oil paintings.

My new year goal is to go back to oils, not exclusively, since I love expressing myself in all mediums. I see now how I missed the flow and even coverage of oils. The fact that I can easily correct mistakes and the brilliance of the colors are some other reasons I love this medium.

Keep checking as more oil spills on the east coast of Florida.

Miami Watercolor Society Signature Member

Four years ago, a year before my retirement, I was making plans to fill the hours of my day. I had always wanted to paint with watercolors and started reading about it, buying supplies, and painting miniatures. The more I did it, the more I liked it. I especially liked the fact that these tiny pieces were selling.

As part of my retirement in 2007, I joined the Lowe Docent Guild. What better way to spend my days than surrounded by art? At the Lowe, I met Elizabet Chacon. Like me, Elizabet was also a recent retiree, trying out watercolors after years of painting in oils. She was a member of Grovehouse Artists Gallery and met some members of the Miami Watercolor Society there. She encouraged me to attend one of their monthly meetings. I went and enjoyed the meeting so much, that I decided to join the group. In October of 2008, I entered their fall juried exhibition and painted my first regular sized watercolor. To my surprise, I was accepted into the fall show.

The Miami Watercolor Society is a group of very talented artists. Their exhibitions get better and better each year. After my first exhibit with this group, I was hooked. I have continued to enter their exhibitions and have tried to further my knowledge of watercolors.

Last week, during the fall exhibition, I was awarded my Signature Membership. What an honor! I look forward to exhibiting with this group for many years to come.
