Are Acrylics For Me?

Everyone starts a new year making resolutions. Most of the people I know make resolutions about diets and losing weight. Since I have never had a problem with weight, I start out the new year with a list of things I would like to do or accomplish. This year, I decided to make a move towards acrylics. Having worked with oils most of my life and watercolors for the past three years, I thought another water-based medium might be fun. Acrylics have the look of oils without the mess and odor.

I heard a lot about a teacher and have seen the results of a couple of friends that have taken his class. My first two classes involved a very boring exercise. It frustrated me, but I was still excited about getting the paint on the canvas. I am trying to keep an open mind and I am determined to learn from this man. If that was not enough, I enrolled today for another acrylic class at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden.

For the most part in oils, as well as watercolor, I tend to paint in a realistic manner. I decided that I would set myself free and do something abstract with acrylic. I had taken a closeup of some plants which looked abstract and had beautiful colors. I used that photo as my inspiration......and here is the final result. Come back and check as I progress in this new medium.

Photography and Painting

I have found that most artists I know start a painting, or get inspired, from an image on a photograph. Up until now, I have also painted best when looking at a reference picture. It seems that as an artist, a photograph is either my best friend or my worst enemy, depending on how the final piece turns out. There are times when my creativity takes over and my end result looks better than the photograph and that makes me very happy. However, at other times, more than I want to admit, my final product is not what I hoped if compared to the photograph. Starting this new decade, I will continue to use photographs to paint and if I am not pleased with the end result, I will share my photographs instead. Sometimes we must learn to just admire "Mother Nature".
